Saudi Arabia’s Ramadan

As Ramadan reaches its halfway point, with millions of Muslims undertaking Umrah, the Saudi Ministry of Culture’s Fashion Commission has launched the Sustainable Ihram initiative, aimed at recycling and repurposing the traditional garment.

The ihram, a simple white attire representing purity and devotion, plays an essential role in both the Umrah and Hajj pilgrimages. Given the substantial number of ihrams discarded each year, this initiative aims to minimize textile waste while maintaining religious practices.

Launched last month in partnership with the Saudi Investment Recycling Co. and eco-fashion brand Tadweem, the project focuses on transforming used ihrams into new garments through a circular textile approach.

To support the initiative, 336 collection bins were placed in Mina, collecting large quantities of used ihrams. These garments were then sorted, cleaned, shredded, and rewoven into fresh fabric. While the current process involves Dubai for raw material conversion and Turkiye for manufacturing, Tadweem CEO Mustafa Bukhari shared plans to eventually relocate production to Saudi Arabia.

The sustainable ihrams are priced at $25.98 (SR98) and are currently available in Madinah, with plans to expand availability to Makkah, airports, and a dedicated store. At the Jeddah Hajj and Umrah Conference, Tadweem also showcased high-quality leather bags crafted from recycled ihram fabric.
