A massive storm has caused new travel chaos across the US, forcing Delta, Air Canada, United, Korean Air, Spirit, American, and more to cancel over seventy flights and delay hundreds at major airports, including Hollywood Burbank, Harry Reid (Las Vegas), and San Jose International. The severe weather, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and snowfall, has not only disrupted air travel but also triggered evacuation orders, road closures, power outages, and even a tornado in Southern California, with authorities warning of continued flight delays and dangerous conditions.
Major Flight Cancellations and Delays
At Hollywood Burbank Airport, 46 flights were canceled, with Southwest Airlines suffering the worst impact, scrapping 38% of its flights. Delays also affected 30 other flights.
At Harry Reid International in Las Vegas, 371 flights were delayed, and 11 were canceled, as strong winds created hazardous takeoff and landing conditions.
San Francisco Bay Oakland International and San Jose International also saw major disruptions. San Jose reported 9 cancellations and 29 delays, while Oakland recorded 11 cancellations and 27 delays.
Tornado, Flooding, and Mudslides Batter Southern California
Beyond the travel chaos, Southern California is experiencing widespread flooding, mudslides, and heavy snowfall.
A rare tornado with 85 mph winds touched down in Pico Rivera early Thursday, snapping trees and damaging homes and vehicles. No injuries were reported, but the twister added to the growing list of weather-related emergencies.
Floodwaters have led to road closures and rescues. In Boyle Heights, Los Angeles firefighters saved a person stranded on a concrete alcove along the rapidly rising Los Angeles River. Heavy rain has caused debris flows in burn-scarred areas, and in the mountains surrounding Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties, snowfall has reached up to 10 inches, forcing school closures and leaving thousands without power.
Evacuation Orders Issued Across the Region
With the threat of mudslides and flooding growing, officials have issued evacuation orders and warnings in multiple counties.
In Los Angeles County, evacuation warnings cover areas near the Eaton, Palisades, and Sunset fire burn scars, with neighborhoods from the Getty Villa to Runyon Canyon at high risk.
In Orange County, officials shut down Trabuco Canyon Road due to fallen trees and mud-covered pavement.
Malibu residents in hillside communities like Carbon Beach, Big Rock, and Sweetwater Canyon have been urged to leave as conditions worsen.
The city of Sierra Madre issued mandatory evacuation orders for homes near the Sierra Madre and Lannan debris basins. Altadena residents near the San Gabriel foothills were also warned to prepare for potential evacuations.
A powerful storm has caused over seventy flight cancellations and hundreds of delays at Hollywood Burbank, Harry Reid, and San Jose airports, disrupting travel for Delta, Air Canada, United, Korean Air, Spirit, American, and more. The severe weather has also triggered evacuations, road closures, and power outages, with officials warning of continued travel disruptions.
More Disruptions Expected as Storm Moves South
While the worst of the storm has passed through Los Angeles County, forecasters warn that dangerous conditions are shifting southward. Evacuation orders could be extended, and flight disruptions are likely to continue as airlines adjust schedules.
With severe weather affecting both air and ground travel, officials are urging residents and travelers to stay informed and prepare for continued delays.
