Malaysia Emerges As Top Destination For Singapore Bus Travelers In 2024

Singaporeans are embracing affordable and sustainable travel with buses as a top choice. redBus reports record bookings, driven by millennials and Gen Z adventurers.

Singapore’s cross-border travel scene witnessed a dynamic transformation in 2024, as buses emerged as the preferred mode of transport for an increasing number of travelers. redBus, the world’s largest bus ticketing platform, reported a surge in bookings, with over 180,000 bus seats reserved by Singapore-based travelers throughout the year. This shift highlights a growing preference for cost-effective, convenient, and sustainable travel options.

Millennials and Gen Z Drive Growth

The platform revealed a 20% increase in new users from Singapore, driven predominantly by millennials and Gen Z travelers. These younger adventurers are opting for affordable and eco-friendly options for regional getaways. Over 124,000 tickets were also booked by travelers from neighboring countries heading to Singapore, further showcasing the platform’s regional appeal.

“Singaporeans are increasingly embracing buses for cross-border travel, not just for affordability but also for the convenience and sustainability they offer,” noted Krishnan Ramaswami, Chief Business Officer of redBus. “Younger generations, in particular, value seamless travel experiences, which include the ability to plan their trips—from transportation to activities—on a single platform.”

Key Trends in Singapore’s Cross-Border Travel

Malaysia Routes Dominate

Nearly 70% of Singapore’s bus bookings were for Malaysia, with Johor Bahru (JB) leading the pack at 45% of total trips. Other popular destinations included Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Genting Highlands, and Seremban. The enduring appeal of Malaysia reflects its accessibility and affordability as a favorite getaway for Singaporeans.

Youth-Focused Adventures

Around 40% of redBus users in Singapore are aged 21–30, underlining the appeal of bus travel to young explorers. This demographic seeks cultural, scenic, and group travel experiences, making buses an ideal choice for flexible and affordable regional travel.

Rising Interest in Thailand

Beyond Malaysia, destinations like Hat Yai, Thailand, are seeing increased interest. These locations offer a mix of cultural and leisure experiences, attracting Singaporeans eager for diverse travel options. This trend signals a growing appetite for exploring beyond familiar destinations.

Ferry Connectivity

redBus also reported over 15,000 ferry ticket bookings, partnering with major operators like Sindo Ferry and Batam Fast to provide seamless travel options to Indonesia. These services enhance connectivity for travelers seeking alternative regional escape routes.

Supporting Sustainability and Innovation

The rise in cross-border bus travel aligns with Singapore’s sustainability initiatives, with buses playing a crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint of regional travel. redBus complements this effort by continuously expanding its network and introducing innovative features.

In 2024, the platform launched its “Things to Do” feature, offering over 500 activities across Singapore and Malaysia. From cultural tours to local experiences, travelers can now plan their transportation and activities on a single platform, enriching their journeys and simplifying their plans.

Krishnan Ramaswami emphasized redBus’s mission: “We’re committed to redefining cross-border travel for Singaporeans, offering reliable, enjoyable, and innovative services. Looking ahead, we aim to expand our network and introduce new features to meet the evolving needs of modern travelers.”

Looking Ahead

With its innovative offerings and focus on customer experience, redBus is poised to further solidify its position as the leading travel platform in Asia. By enabling Singaporeans to explore regional destinations with confidence and ease, the platform is setting the standard for the future of sustainable and convenient travel.
