On January 17, 2025, Stadler proudly celebrated the 15th anniversary of its state-of-the-art car body factory in Szolnok, Hungary. The event featured a significant milestone: the unveiling of Hungary’s first aluminum double-decker car body, produced entirely at the Szolnok plant. This landmark achievement was celebrated by Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Peter Spuhler, Chairman of Stadler’s Board of Directors. The unveiling symbolizes the remarkable growth of the Szolnok facility and highlights its pivotal role in Hungary’s railway manufacturing industry.

Advancing Technology and Sustainable Production

Stadler has continually invested in the Szolnok factory to ensure its global competitiveness. In 2023, the company announced a €45 million development program, which includes the adoption of advanced friction stir welding technology. This cutting-edge process minimizes raw material usage, reduces energy consumption, and generates less waste, aligning with Stadler’s commitment to sustainability. The upgraded production line is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2025, further enhancing the plant’s capacity and efficiency.

Central and Eastern Europe’s Largest Car Body Facility

Since its inauguration in 2009, the Szolnok factory has grown into the largest and most modern car body production facility in Central and Eastern Europe. Initially designed to produce 200 car bodies annually with a workforce of 200, the plant has dramatically expanded its capabilities. Over 5,600 car bodies have been manufactured to date, with the factory exceeding the 5,000-unit milestone in September 2023. Trains featuring car bodies from Szolnok now operate in 14 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Norway.

In addition to single-deck car bodies, the plant’s recent development program allows it to produce double-deck units. This expansion has created approximately 170 new full-time jobs, increasing the total workforce and cementing Szolnok’s position as Stadler’s largest car body production hub. Stadler has invested over €200 million in the facility, underscoring its strategic importance to the company’s global operations.

Strengthening Hungary’s Rail Network

Beyond its role as a key employer, Stadler contributes significantly to Hungary’s rail transport sector. The company has supplied 195 cutting-edge trains to local operators, including Magyar Államvasutak (MÁV) and GYSEV. These fleets, comprising 143 FLIRT trains, 40 KISS double-deckers, and 12 Citylink units, account for one-third of the total rail mileage in Hungary. With an impressive availability and reliability rate exceeding 90%, Stadler trains transport nearly half of Hungary’s rail passengers annually.

The 15th anniversary celebration at Szolnok highlights Stadler’s unwavering commitment to innovation, sustainable development, and the growth of the Hungarian rail industry. With its continued investments and technological advancements, the Szolnok plant is set to remain a cornerstone of Stadler’s success in the years to come.
