Finland is poised to transform long-distance railway travel with the announcement from the national rail operator regarding the introduction of a new class of night trains equipped with latest comforts and conveniences. The overnight train travel is witnessing a surge in demand and the newest trains are intended to merge the overnight travel experience with modern hotel-level comforts. The first departures are scheduled for late 2025, perfectly aligned with the anticipated demand for travel to experience the winter wonderland of Lapland.
The new fleet includes nine advanced sleeper cars and eight innovative car-carrier coaches, designed to accommodate both passengers and vehicles on long-haul routes. Additionally, the railway company has secured an option to expand the fleet further, with the potential acquisition of up to 30 additional sleeper coaches and 30 car-carriers, signaling a strong commitment to enhancing Finland’s night train network.
Passenger comfort is at the forefront of this upgrade. The interiors of the sleeper cabins have been thoughtfully redesigned to allow for seamless work, dining, and relaxation within the privacy of each cabin. Certain cabins also feature private showers, elevating the onboard experience to a level comparable with high-end hotel accommodations. The car-carrier coaches enable travelers to transport their vehicles effortlessly, opening up new opportunities for scenic road trips upon arrival.
The night trains will operate on key routes connecting southern Finland to the Arctic north, including Helsinki, Turku, and Tampere to destinations such as Oulu, Rovaniemi, Kemijärvi, and Kolari. This expansion ensures that both domestic and international travelers can enjoy comfortable and efficient rail journeys to Finland’s most iconic winter destinations.
Bookings for these luxurious night train trips are now open through March 2026. Prices for private cabins start at €49, while cabins equipped with showers are available from €74, offering a range of options to suit different travel preferences. With this bold initiative, Finland is setting a new benchmark for sustainable, comfortable, and memorable long-distance rail travel.
