Wilmington Airport Misses Out on Key West Expansion

Along with Avelo, Wilmington Airport’s (ILG) has also remained in the dark as Avelo has left Wilmington out of its new service to Key West, Florida. Earlier in the year, Avelo announced new plans to service the area with two flights a week from New Haven, CT.

Wilmington airport officials anticipated that this airport would be connected to the airline services, but the limited space available at Key West’s terminal made it impossible to accommodate services from Delaware.

Other areas of operation are being expanded by Avelo Airlines. Earlier this year, Avelo discontinued flights from Concord to Wilmington due to low passenger numbers, but services to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic will remain available.

Although Wilmington does not have the required Customs and Border Protection station for international flights, the airport is still looking forward to additional changes to Avelo’s timetable. The airline’s recent announcement to discontinue its West Coast services by the end of the year will reduce the fleet by three Boeing 737 jets, which may be guarded and made available for additional routes the airline is planning for Wilmington and other cities in the Avelo network.

Avelo has also increased the number of flights between Wilmington and Orlando from two to four weekly services. The airline also brought forward the return of San Juan services that will be resumed in October, shortening the seasonal pause by a month.

American Airlines Adds New European Routes for 2026

In the meantime, American Airlines is planning to expand its offerings for the European countries in the summer of 2026.

With plans to service 20 transatlantic routes from Philadelphia, the airline will add Budapest, Hungary and Prague, Czech Republic as new destinations. These routes are likely to fetch passengers who wish to travel to and from Philadelphia and visit two of Europe’s iconic capitals.
